Origins

This week I went to see the latest Marvel film, ‘Captain Marvel’. It’s one of those ‘origins’ or ‘backstory’ movies where we discover how this super hero came into existence. It was a lot of fun, full of twists with great action. I was reading Luke’s gospel, and chapter 2 reveals the ‘origin’ story of Jesus. Aged 12, he went with his parents and others to Jerusalem for a festival called ‘Passover’. After it was over, they headed home, but Jesus stayed on in the Temple in the city. After much searching Joseph and Mary eventually found him...

His mother said to him, ‘Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.’ ‘Why were you searching for me?’ he asked. ‘Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?’
— Luke 2:48-49 The NIV Bible

Like any parent, Mary & Joseph were relieved to find their boy, but they didn’t really understand what was going on. Another translation says that Jesus was ‘about His Father’s business’. This little insight helps us to see what was going on in Jesus as a 12 year old. He already had a relationship with Father God, and he know about the significance of being in the Temple (God’s address on the earth back then). That pretty amazing! As a Christian, do you know and invest in your relationship with Father God? Can it be said of you that you that you are ‘about the Father’s business’?
