Light of the world
The other day, two of my neighbours, who live next door to each other, where out at the same time putting up their exterior Christmas lights.
I teased them saying that I would judge who had the best lights. We laughed together as one said that it wouldn’t be them, but they were both really good!
There are a few properties who really go to town with festive lights. They are more like installations, covering not only the house but the front garden as well!
When are kids were young, we loved driving around the estates in search for the house with the best lights.
I still love seeing these Christmas lights, as they seem to make the houses and streets sparkle. There is something quite ‘magical’ about it.
Light is amazing and the contrast between that and darkness is a powerful metaphor. Even the smallest light can pierce darkness and be seen from a distance.
If you have already attended a Carol Service, or plan to go this weekend, there is a high chance you will hear a Bible reading from the Old Testament book of Isaiah…
“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.”
This announcement about the arrival of the Messiah (Jesus), paints an evocative picture of people living in darkness, needing light.
When I was a child we had regular power cuts. Life stopped when the lights went out, as we rummaged around for candles to help see. It was not only the lights, but the heating and TV too.
Life in darkness is not good. Isaiah foretold of a light that was coming. This light would be more powerful than the darkness. Not only would it help people to see, but also bring life and, like a torch, reveal the way.
However dark things may feel or seem for you today, there is good news! The Bible says Jesus is the ‘Light of the World’, let me encourage you to discover Him this Christmas.
God bless you :)
