Change is a gift

It’s New Year’s Eve! Thousands will flock to capital cities all around the world to watch magnificent firework displays as 2026 begins.

Many people will party all night long and see in the New Year in homes and pubs. What will I be doing, you ask? I’ll be at home, having a meal, watching a movie then off to bed!

When our children were younger we would often have friends over, play games, eat, drink and stay up until Big Ben struck midnight. But not anymore, as it doesn’t appeal to me now.

For some, this is a time to reflect on the past 12 months and to consider the year ahead, which may include some new year’s resolutions.

I think many start a new year with good intentions, but maintaining that can be hard as life gets going again after the Christmas break.

Whatever we may face in 2026, there are three things I believe we can be certain of:

  1. There will be situations we see or face that we cannot change, things beyond our control. Global events (both good and bad) caused by nature or humans will occur, and all we can do is observe.

  2. We will have opportunities to change: We will find ourselves in situations where something or someone affects us, presenting us with options of how to respond.

  3. God will not change: The Bible says that God’s character and nature is unchanging and that He, like a rock, will never move from this.

The ability to change is a gift from God. Just imagine if we all behaved now like we did when we were a child or, worse, a teenager!

There is a God given way out that can radically change our thought patterns and behaviour. It’s called repentance. When we humble ourselves, and acknowledge our need for God, He loves to come to our aid. The Bible puts it like this…

Do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realising that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?
— Romans 2:4 The NIV Bible

As we say ‘goodbye’ to 2025 and ‘hello’ to 2026 there is good news! You do not have to stay as you are. If you feel trapped into a certain way of thinking and acting, there is an alternative way, and it is Jesus. Why not give Him a try in 2026?

God bless you:)
